A story of hope and gratitude from someone committed to their recovery.
Mahajan enjoys sharing patient recovery stories because there is no better way to show the benefits of addiction treatment. Instead of telling you how great it is to reach long-term goals, we want patients to tell their stories.
With living proof of recovery through our patients, we hope to inspire others who may be afraid to reach out. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed, but you must know that your situation is not hopeless. There is an entire team of professionals who are ready to help you turn your life around.
If you’re not convinced, you can hear it straight from Kyam’s mouth in this video or read the transcription below.
Kyam M.’s Patient Success Story
Introduction
“My name is Kyam Matthews, and I’m from Portsmouth, Ohio. Many things brought me to recovery, but nothing more so than the desperation I experienced. I couldn’t live the way I was living, as I was only existing. My life without alcohol and drugs felt miserable. I was in an endless cycle of misuse.”
Finding the Right Care
“My life changed when I began receiving a level of care that I hadn’t received previously. I received support that met me where I was and saw me as a complete person. I found that care in Mahajan Therapeutics; I didn’t feel like a number or an object in their program. They made me feel like me. I just felt like me getting the help I needed.”
Supportive and Accountable Environment
“The staff called my faults out openly and held me accountable without causing me to enter spaces of shame. They went above and beyond to help me succeed. They provided transportation when I needed it and a safe and healthy living environment. Also, the tools I needed to communicate openly with my family. Mahajan helped me heal myself and my relationships. They provided me with a solution and helped me pave a path to walk in that solution.”
Ongoing Support and Transformation
“I remain a person with a substance use disorder. Mahajan has kept me accountable in a loving and caring way that taught me what love was. I learned how to trust and I didn’t want to change my lifestyle. I wanted to change the consequences. Through their program, I learned what I needed to heal the root of my addiction. I didn’t know what recovery looked like. I only knew survival. Mahajan taught me how to live—as a person in recovery but also as a man. They helped me see who I was and the person I could be in the future.”
Advice to Others
“The best advice I could give someone who is struggling with addiction is this: trust someone. Trust professionals to get you the help you need. The way of life you’re living now will always be there, and you don’t risk losing it. But, if you don’t try, you risk losing all the life you could live as a sober person.”
Conclusion
“My life and relationships have completely changed. I feel I give back to my family. I no longer am taking from them. My life is no longer self-focused. I feel purposeful, and I feel successful. I feel free.”

Begin Your Recovery Jounrey
If you’ve found Kyam’s story inspiring, there’s something you can do today to start your journey. Firstly, you can look up Narcotics Anonymous (NA) and Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings that are local to you. There are two types of meetings: open and closed.
- Open meetings are available to anyone interested in AA and NA programs. You can visit as an observer, as someone affected by a loved one’s addiction. If you are curious about starting the 12 steps, it’s a good idea to sit through an open meeting at least once.
- Closed meetings are for AA and NA members only. People in these groups are committed to their sobriety, maintain friendships and choose sponsors within the community. If you decide to join AA, you can join these meetings soon.
At both types of meetings you may be asked to speak about yourself and why you’re there. The AA member conducting the meeting decides on the format. Meetings can occur in-person, online and via telephone. You will have to check the schedule for your local chapter online.
