How Does Vivitrol Work?

What This Means for Patients

The Detox Requirement Before Starting Vivitrol

Vivitrol for Alcohol Use Disorder

Benefits of Vivitrol as a Non-Addictive Treatment

No Risk of Physical Dependence

Because Vivitrol is not opioid-based, it does not cause physical dependence. If treatment stops, the medication itself does not create a withdrawal syndrome.

No Potential for Misuse

Vivitrol does not cause euphoria or sedation, so it has no street value and no abuse potential. That eliminates concerns about diversion or misuse.

Ideal for Certain Professions

Some patients in regulated or safety-sensitive fields prefer Vivitrol, including those working in:

  • Healthcare settings
  • Commercial driving
  • Law enforcement
  • Aviation and transportation

Its non-opioid formulation can help patients pursue treatment without the concerns they may have about narcotic medications and workplace expectations.

Simple Monthly Treatment

Vivitrol is administered once every 28 days as a single intramuscular injection in the gluteal muscle.

Because the medication is extended-release, there is no daily dose to remember. That can make treatment easier to maintain over time.

FAQs

Is Vivitrol an opioid or a narcotic?

No. Vivitrol is fully non-opioid and non-addictive. It is a blocker, or antagonist, so it does not produce a high and does not cause physical dependence.

Why do I have to wait 7 to 10 days after my last opioid use to start Vivitrol?

If Vivitrol is started too soon, it can trigger precipitated withdrawal by clearing receptors of existing opioids. The opioid-free waiting period helps make the medication safer to start.

What happens if I drink or use opioids while on Vivitrol?

Vivitrol blocks the receptors involved in opioid euphoria and reduces the rewarding effects of alcohol. Trying to overpower that blockade with large amounts of opioids is extremely dangerous and increases overdose risk.

Can Vivitrol help with alcohol cravings?

Yes. Because it affects the brain’s reward response, Vivitrol can make alcohol less pleasurable and may lower the intensity and frequency of cravings.
